BRIEF DESCRIPTION / BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

It was all about innovation and competitiveness among SME’s in the Asian Region. It was noted that innovation is important for the success of many companies. If we combined productivity, innovation and creativity, the improvements in solving problems will be a quantum leap instead of just being incremental.

OBJECTIVES FOR PARTICIPATION

1. To learn from each other SME companies in the Asian Region and Benchmarking.
2. To drive the national innovation agenda to generate New-Wave Wealth.

PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS

There were about 21 participants all over the Asian Countries. Philippine participants were Mr. Rey E. Calooy, Chairman of Filipino-Cebuano Business Club, an organization for SME’s in Metro Cebu, while Mr. Ramir Bonghanoy is the President of GTH Foundation, a group of MSME Exporters in Cebu.

SCOPE, METHODOLOGY AND CONTENT

Strong initiative of government to promote high-tech start-ups and establishment of Business Incubation for MSME’s. Encouragement of new breed of entrepreneurs. We learned from site visits like cross functional team strategy, Goldmine Management System, Microscopic Market Analysis and Suggestion System. Highlighting the Philippine country Paper: MSMEs vital engine of the economy 99.6% of the firms, 70% of employment, 32% value-added, 60% of all exporters. In South Korea, SME’s 99.9% of firms, 87.7% of employment, 49.2% of value-added, 32% of exports and innovation leader.

OUTCOMES AND EVALUATION

It was a great encounter with all the APO members. Each member presented their own country paper on innovation and competitiveness especially the success stories of South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Republic of China. Now, I can even re-echo to my fellow Filipino entrepreneurs about the success of the different SME companies in South Korea. During the benchmarking, I learned the best practices like the innovation rooms.

LEARNING, RECOMMENDATIONS AND ACTION STEPS

a. Innovation culture in the country must be high and positive.
b. Support of the government on access to Finance on innovations and inventions
c. Encouragement of entrepreneurship
d. Benchmarking, competitiveness index and innovation index
e. Innovate with 4 core values that is “VISI”:
V = value for money, value creation with low cost but high impact
I = Innovation and Creativity, Turn good idea into something tangible and valuable
o Think Out of the Envelope, Quantum Leap, Pie is equally distributed
S = Speed and System, We need to do things differently and fast (Delivery) whereby speed with system has a relation with competitiveness.
I = Integrity, Value of integrity is very important to government which means giving people trust and confidence.

ACTION PLAN AND DISSEMINATION

I will conduct a series of re-echo session to our fellow Cebuano MSME entrepreneurs.
