To share information security awareness and good practices of information security management standard setting, the APO Liaison / International Relations Office (APO/IRO) in cooperation with the Academy’s HRMDO organized an echo session of APO grantees on Managing and Securing Information using ISO27000 Standards last 29 November 2011 in DAP Function Room 4, Pasig City.
Two (2) APO grantees were invited to share their learning from a recently-held APO-sponsored training in Indonesia. Ms. Jenalyn Ferrer, Project Officer from the DAP Center for Knowledge Management, discussed the relevance of Information Security in today’s information age, and provided an overview of the Information Security Management System (ISMS). On the other hand, Mr. Michael John del Mundo, Project Coordinator and IT/Database Administrator of APO/IRO, discussed the requirements of ISMS ISO27000 standards- from planning to audit. He also showcased the ISMS ISO27000 best practices of PT Panasonic Gobel Energy, a major Japanese company based in Indonesia, and some other highlights of the APO training.
Attended by twenty four (24) DAP technical and administrative personnel, the session had a lively discussion on the implementation of ISMS in the local setting. The resource speakers explained that ISMS does not contradict the government transparency policy. In fact, ISMS facilitates the preservation of the integrity and availability of critical information needed by the public.
Compared with the public sector, interest in ISMS among local private enterprises specifically MSMEs, however, remains low. Thus, as the National Productivity Organization, it has become a challenge for DAP to promote the adoption of ISMS and raise public awareness on information security management both to the public and private sectors. But in order to do this, DAP must first make itself an example for others to follow.
“Top management involvement is important in implementing any P&Q initiative such as ISMS. That’s why as part of our action plan, my co-participant and I will prepare and present a proposal to management for the adoption of ISMS in DAP next year”, Ms. Ferrer concluded.
